he purpose of the Finnish Artists' Studio Foundation is to
secure and rent at reasonable rates work facilities and studio apartments for
visual artists and to take part otherwise in enhancing their working conditions.
The Foundation also supports the policies of the Association. It is a
not-for-profit organisation.
The Foundation was established in 1990 to carry on the maintenance of real
estate previously owned by the Artists' Association. Its objective, once upkeep
and administrative expenses have been taken into account, is to minimise as much
as possible the rents and other costs of the studio spaces and residences. In
the beginning of year 2000 the Foundation will establish a office in the new

The Foundation is a member of International Association of Residential Arts Centres (Res Artis).
The Foundation is administered by a governing board, four of whose members are selected by the Artists' Association and one by the Ministry of Education. The director prepares the groundwork on general issues and the selection of occupants, and is responsible for overall Foundation activities. Superintendence of the real estate owned by the Foundation is the responsibility of an realty services agency.
The Foundation owns two studio apartment buildings in the Helsinki area and one in Kuopio. The Foundation will purchase an industrial building in Helsinki to be removed as studio building at the end of year 1999. In Sammatti in the countryside and in Jerisjärvi, Lapland, there are studios and cottages for work and recreation.. The leasing period for residential studios is ten years and for ateliers five years. Artists' Association members are informed of vacant work facilities and residential studios, and the governing board of the Foundation selects occupants on the basis of applications.
