Visual artists need various templates in the course of their work. Contracts must be drawn up, for example, before selling an artwork, accepting a commission, placing artworks on display or renting work facilities.
Under Finnish contract law, a contract can be verbal or written as both are equally valid. In practice, however, it is virtually impossible to prove the contents of a verbal contract. For this reason, all contracts should primarily be made in writing or, as a minimum, the key provisions of the contract should be confirmed via email.
Artists are often asked to comment on the contract or draft the contract themselves. It's wise to do this carefully, since insufficient contracts or individual clauses may cause surprising consequences. Also the lawyer of the Artists’ Association of Finland provides legal advice on matters related to contracts to members of member associations.
