Welcome to a seminar where we will discuss and explore examples of more ecological working methods, alongside reflections on residency activities and the everyday life of artists from a sustainability perspective.

Register for the seminar here by 31 October 2025 at the latest (the link opens in a new window).

Sustainability and sustainable development have been discussed for decades. Gradually, concerns about the ecological crisis are beginning to influence ways of working on a more concrete level – or at least they should be. Artists, too, are considering how their own practices might be made more ecological. At the same time, the art world still follows established, unsustainable models: producing large numbers of works in materials that are ecologically problematic and difficult to recycle (such as the combination of acrylic and aluminium in photographic art), shipping them across the globe, and travelling by air to residencies and exhibitions.

The subject is directly connected to everyday choices and to the entire artistic process. Sustainability can also be understood in a broader sense – as sustainability in life and in the environment, a lifestyle or a way of being that supports the wellbeing of the individual, the community, and the planet.

The seminar speakers are visual artist and curator Anna Ruth, artist duo Sasha and Pavel Rotts, and visual artist and researcher Miina Hujala. The seminar will be held in English.

The seminar is arranged by the Nordic Art Association in Finland and Nordic Culture Point.
